Armed with just eight dirhams and a vision, he left his home in Kerala, India, to settle in Dubai, a place that at the time was far from the urban marvel it is today.

Arriving in Dubai on February 26, 1965, Jamaluddin was met with a landscape starkly different from the bustling city we know now. Dubai lacked modern amenities and infrastructure; there were no proper roads between emirates, and even basic conveniences like air conditioning were absent. Despite these challenges, Jamaluddin’s adventurous spirit and foresight saw potential in the nascent emirate, a potential he was determined to harness.
The Journey to Education
Jamaluddin’s journey in Dubai began modestly, but his ambitions were anything but. After years working in the banking sector, where he helped introduce systems that benefited the expatriate community, he made a pivotal decision to pursue his true calling: education. In 1984, he founded the Crescent English High School, a testament to his dedication to accessible education. The school, started in a modest villa, was created with the mission of providing affordable education to low- and middle-income families, a principle that remains central to its operation today.

The Crescent English High School stands as a beacon of Jamaluddin’s commitment to educational accessibility. By maintaining low tuition fees, the school ensures that quality education is not a privilege but a right available to all. Now situated in Al Qusais, the school follows the Indian CBSE curriculum and serves over 1,600 students from diverse backgrounds.

Growing up in a village with limited educational resources, he was the first Muslim university graduate from his community, a milestone that fueled his passion for educational equity. While he never met his role model, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Jamaluddin was honored this year by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum for his service to Dubai’s educational sector.
