Emicool Unveils Ambitious Net Zero Strategy by 2050
Emirates District Cooling, commonly known as Emicool, has laid out a comprehensive plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This initiative is a pivotal part of Emicool’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability and aligns with the UAE’s broader vision of fostering a sustainable economy.
Data-Driven Approach to Decarbonization
The roadmap devised by Emicool is rooted in rigorous data analysis and technical modeling. It outlines a strategic path towards significant carbon reduction within the company’s operational framework. The plan is anchored on a 2023 emissions baseline of 183,423 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e), encompassing Scope 1, Scope 2, and pertinent Scope 3 emissions. To facilitate this transition, Emicool has committed approximately AED 116 million to energy optimization initiatives through 2027, complemented by a broader green financing strategy.
Interim and Long-Term Emission Reduction Targets
As part of its long-term decarbonization efforts, Emicool has set an interim target approved by the Board to reduce emissions by 10% by 2035 against the 2023 baseline. This milestone is just the beginning, with expectations of further reductions beyond 2035 as low-carbon technologies evolve and the UAE’s energy mix continues to shift towards cleaner options.
The ultimate objective for Emicool is to achieve approximately a 90% reduction in emissions by 2050. The remaining emissions, which are more challenging to eliminate, will be neutralized only after all possible direct reductions have been fully explored.

The roadmap details a phased strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This includes improvements in operational efficiency, optimization of plants and networks, digital transformation initiatives, incorporation of renewable energy sources, and the adoption of future low-carbon technologies.
District cooling, a key component of sustainable urban development, enhances energy efficiency compared to traditional cooling systems. By reducing energy consumption across residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments, Emicool’s roadmap further integrates sustainability into its operations.
Operational Scope and Future Reviews
Operating 20 district cooling plants with over 306,000 refrigeration tonnes of connected capacity, Emicool supports various developments across Dubai. The roadmap is designed to be dynamic, with reviews scheduled every five years to incorporate technological advancements, regulatory changes, and operational progress.
