Consumer Discontent Over Retail Price Mismatches in UAE

Dubai: An increasing number of consumers in the UAE are voicing concerns over discrepancies between prices marked on store shelves and those charged at the checkout counter, especially for items under promotional campaigns. This issue has led to unexpected financial burdens for many shoppers who find that discounted products are billed at higher rates than advertised.

Consumers Report Alarmingly Frequent Price Differences

Shoppers have shared their experiences, highlighting significant disparities between the advertised price of promotional items and the amount they were ultimately charged. Basem Zaher, a frequent shopper, revealed that such discrepancies have often led to higher-than-expected bills. Similarly, Hassan Hamed noted a stark difference in pricing when a product marked at AED15 on the shelf was billed at AED26 at checkout. Mahmoud Ali also expressed concerns about the recurring nature of these inconsistencies, which disrupt planned budgets and inflate household expenses.

Authorities Urge Vigilance Amid Growing Consumer Complaints

The Emirates Consumer Protection Association has acknowledged the surge in complaints about this issue, emphasizing that such practices violate consumer rights and are misleading. Mohammed Abdullah Al Naour, the Secretary-General of the association, has called on consumers to be diligent in checking their receipts and reporting any discrepancies to store management and relevant authorities. Al Naour outlined several steps for consumers, including the immediate review of receipts post-purchase, utilizing available price scanners, and documenting shelf prices through photographs when discrepancies are observed.

He stressed the importance of reporting issues to local economic departments if store management fails to address them promptly. According to Al Naour, price discrepancies often arise with promotional items, particularly when offers expire but promotional labels remain, or when checkout systems are not updated to reflect new discounts.

Retailers Acknowledge Errors, Cite Operational Challenges

Retailers, on their part, have acknowledged these discrepancies but attributed them to operational errors. Mohammed Al Hashemi, CEO of Union Coop, stated that such mismatches are unacceptable and usually result from unintended errors. He explained that once promotional stocks are exhausted, the checkout system might automatically revert to the standard price if not promptly updated. Al Hashemi emphasized the necessity for shelf prices to align with checkout prices and encouraged consumers to report any inconsistencies.

Dilip Vishal, a purchasing manager at a retail outlet, echoed these sentiments, noting that most price discrepancies stem from delays in operational updates. Such delays include the failure to remove expired promotional labels or update pricing systems linked to checkout counters, leading to consumers being charged more than the shelf price.

Call for Enhanced Consumer Protection Measures

This issue has sparked calls for enhanced consumer protection measures, urging authorities and retailers to implement stricter monitoring and updating systems to prevent such occurrences. By ensuring that promotional labels are removed promptly and checkout systems are regularly updated, retailers can maintain consumer trust and avoid potential legal challenges.

The Emirates Consumer Protection Association continues to monitor the situation closely and is advocating for more stringent regulations to safeguard consumer rights in the UAE. As this issue persists, consumers are encouraged to maintain vigilance and actively participate in reporting any discrepancies to foster a fair and transparent retail environment.
