The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre in Abu Dhabi has launched a captivating visual experience titled ‘The Moon Has a Story… Told by Light’. This innovative display, inspired by the lunar phases, aims to deepen visitors’ appreciation of the UAE Hijri Calendar, which is meticulously crafted by the Centre.
Enhancing Cultural Connection Through Art
This initiative is part of the Centre’s broader mission to integrate visual arts into the visitor experience at the mosque, thereby fostering a deeper connection with the rich Islamic cultural and civilisational heritage. The display is a harmonious blend of art and architecture, reflecting the mosque’s distinctive design while narrating the story of the moon’s phases.
Astronomical Precision and Islamic Heritage
The light show emphasizes the intricate relationship between celestial movements and the Hijri calendar. The Centre, known for its precise astronomical calculations, produces this calendar annually, providing an accurate framework for timekeeping in accordance with Islamic tradition. The display visually interprets the Qur’anic verse that describes the sun as a radiant source and the moon as a reflected light, serving as a guide for measuring time and years.
Condensed Lunar Experience
The exhibit condenses the mosque’s month-long lunar illumination into an immersive five-minute journey. It starts with a deep blue hue, symbolizing the beginning of the lunar month with the crescent moon. As the month progresses, the illumination intensifies to a bright white at the full moon, before gradually dimming back to deep blue, marking the month’s end.
Advanced Lighting Technology
The advanced lighting system that creates this experience is powered by a ‘lunar clock’, which adjusts the brightness projected onto the mosque’s exterior every two days. This system simulates the gradual changes in the moon’s appearance throughout the Hijri month, linking the mosque’s illumination with the lunar cycle.
A Fusion of Aesthetics and Science
With over 840 lighting units strategically positioned around the mosque, the system projects a seamless illumination across its walls. Twenty-two additional lighting towers enhance this visual harmony, creating an interplay between light and the surrounding clouds. This not only highlights the mosque’s architectural beauty but also offers a unique cultural experience to its visitors.

Presented at the start of each Hijri month, the display is a five-minute celebration that highlights the intersection of light and timekeeping in Islamic tradition.
