Abu Dhabi witnessed a landmark event as the inaugural passenger service on the Etihad Rail network completed its journey from Fujairah, marking a transformative step in the United Arab Emirates’ transport landscape. The train’s arrival at Mohammed Bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi was celebrated with enthusiasm, highlighting the significance of this momentous achievement.

Historic Journey from Fujairah to Abu Dhabi

The pioneer train embarked from Fujairah Station, carrying jubilant passengers eager to experience a new era of mobility within the nation. Expansion Plans and Future Connectivity

Following this successful launch, Etihad Rail is set to expand its services, enhancing connectivity across key urban centers. By September 30, the network will extend to include services to Dubai, Al Dhaid, and Fujairah. Further expansions are planned, reaching Al Dhafra by December 2026 and Sharjah by March 2027, thereby broadening access to the national rail system.

Infrastructure and Capacity

Established in 2009, Etihad Rail aims to operate an extensive rail network spanning over 900 kilometers, linking major cities, ports, and industrial areas. The project is a crucial part of the ‘Fifty Projects’, designed to foster economic diversification, support sustainable development, and enhance logistical efficiency while reducing carbon emissions.

Travel Experience and Amenities

The journey from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah takes approximately 105 minutes, with trains reaching speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. Each train can accommodate 400 passengers and offers two classes of service: ‘Comfort Class’ and ‘Premium Class’. Passengers enjoy amenities such as reserved seating, complimentary Wi-Fi, charging ports, and ample luggage space. Ticket prices for the Abu Dhabi-Fujairah route start at AED 55 for Comfort Class and AED 120 for Premium Class, providing affordable options for diverse travel needs.

Impact on Economy and Environment

The Etihad Rail project is expected to significantly impact the UAE’s economy by supporting supply chain efficiency and promoting economic diversification. Additionally, the rail network is a critical component in reducing the nation’s carbon footprint, aligning with global sustainability goals.

As the service becomes fully operational, it is projected to handle around 10 million passengers annually, underscoring its role in transforming UAE’s public transport scenario.
