Dubai’s Infrastructure Expansion: A New Gateway to Dubai Harbour
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has announced a significant milestone in its infrastructure development, with 90% of the access bridge project to Dubai Harbour now complete. This ambitious project is being undertaken in collaboration with North Holding and aims to enhance connectivity to one of the emirate’s premier waterfront destinations.
Key Features of the Access Bridge
Spanning 1,500 meters, the new bridge is designed with two lanes in each direction, providing a seamless connection from Sheikh Zayed Road to Dubai Harbour. This development is set to transform access to the largest yacht marinas in the Middle East, which are situated within Dubai Harbour. The bridge is a part of RTA’s broader strategy to boost the efficiency of the road network, supporting the emirate’s urbanization and tourism sectors.
Construction Progress and Workforce Involvement
Substantial progress has been made on the project, with core elements such as foundation works, columns, and concrete barriers nearing completion. The construction initiative involves a dedicated workforce of 1,400 engineers and laborers divided into 12 teams. Together, they have clocked over 4 million working hours while adhering to rigorous safety protocols. The project has utilized more than 45,000 cubic meters of concrete and 8,273 tonnes of steel, underscoring the scale of this infrastructural feat.
Timelines for Traffic Flow
According to the RTA’s timeline, traffic coming from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Dubai Harbour will commence in June. Subsequently, in July, routes will open from Dubai Harbour towards Al Naseem Street and the intersection of King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street with Al Naseem Street. These developments are expected to significantly ease traffic flow and reduce travel time.
Leadership and Strategic Vision
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that the project is aligned with the leadership’s vision for Dubai’s growth. The initiative is a testament to the RTA’s commitment to creating a robust and integrated road network, which is essential for supporting the city’s rapid urban and economic expansion. Al Tayer also highlighted the public-private partnership exemplified by the collaboration with North Holding, which is pivotal to the project’s success.
Bridge Design and Capacity
The bridge originates at Interchange 5 on Sheikh Zayed Road, near the American University in Dubai, and extends through Al Naseem Street and Al Falak Street, crossing King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, before reaching Dubai Harbour Road. It is designed to accommodate approximately 6,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, significantly enhancing traffic capacity and efficiency in the area.
Impact on Travel Time and Local Development
One of the key benefits of the new bridge is the anticipated reduction in travel time to and from Dubai Harbour, which is expected to decrease from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes. Abdullah Bin Habtoor, CEO of Shamal Holding, remarked on the bridge’s role as a crucial milestone in Dubai Harbour’s development, reinforcing the area’s status as a leading waterfront destination and bolstering its long-term value for the city.
Strategic Location and Future Prospects
Situated strategically between Bluewaters Island and Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Harbour is in proximity to iconic landmarks such as Burj Al Arab. The area is undergoing a 1.5-kilometer development that includes 24 residential towers and approximately 7,500 apartments, offering a blend of residential, retail, and entertainment opportunities.
