Sheikh Mohamed World Teachers Day

On World Teachers’ Day, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan celebrated the enduring impact of educators by highlighting his fourth-grade teacher, Ahmed Ibrahim Mandi Al Tamimi. A photograph from Sheikh Mohamed’s childhood, dated April 29, 1971, was shared to commemorate the teacher who played a significant role in shaping his formative years.

Commemorating a Childhood Mentor

The shared photograph, bearing the inscription “I dedicate my photo to Professor Ahmed Ibrahim Mandi as a memento and thank you… Mohammed Zayed,” serves as a testament to the deep respect and gratitude Sheikh Mohamed holds for his former teacher. This gesture casts a spotlight on the critical role educators play in personal development, with Sheikh Mohamed expressing appreciation for the lasting impressions left by teachers across the United Arab Emirates.

In a message honoring educators, Sheikh Mohamed remarked, “Let this day be an opportunity for all of us to remember our teachers and express our gratitude to them. Thank you to every teacher who has left an unforgettable mark on our lives.”

Ahmed Mandi: A Pillar in Education

Ahmed Mandi, part of the pioneering cohort of educators in Abu Dhabi, was born in 1946 and embarked on his teaching career after earning a diploma in Bahrain in 1968. His contributions began at Mohammed Bin Al Qasim Primary School before he transitioned to Al Kindi Primary School, where he taught Sheikh Mohamed in the fourth grade. Mandi is remembered not only for his classroom instruction but also for his mentorship during a period of significant educational expansion in Abu Dhabi.

In media appearances, Mandi has described Sheikh Mohamed as a courteous and humble student, a reflection of the values instilled by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who prioritized the educational advancement of his children.

Transitioning from Education to Government

After his teaching tenure, Mandi pursued further studies, earning a bachelor’s degree in Management and Economics from Beirut Arab University in 1975. He then transitioned to government service, starting at the Ministry of Information and later the Ministry of Interior. Over the years, Mandi held various leadership roles, culminating in his retirement in 2008 as Brigadier General, Deputy Director-General for Administrative and Financial Affairs.

Despite his career shift, the values and lessons imparted during his teaching years endured, leaving a lasting impact on his students, including Sheikh Mohamed.

Enduring Recognition and Reunion

The connection between Sheikh Mohamed and his former teacher was publicly rekindled in October 2017 when Sheikh Mohamed visited Mandi at his Abu Dhabi residence. During this reunion, they reflected on their shared history at Al Kindi School, illustrating the profound bond between student and teacher. Sheikh Mohamed commended Mandi’s contributions, emphasizing the foundational role early educators played in the UAE’s educational evolution.

During the visit, Mandi expressed that the recognition from Sheikh Mohamed was “a badge of honor for every teacher,” highlighting the pride and validation felt by educators who participated in nurturing the nation’s youth during its developmental years.

The Legacy of a Teacher’s Influence

The narrative of Sheikh Mohamed and Ahmed Mandi is encapsulated in three significant moments: a cherished photo dedication in 1971, a heartfelt reunion in 2017, and the photo’s republication in 2026 on World Teachers’ Day. These instances encapsulate the enduring influence a teacher can have, resonating through years and across generations.

As Sheikh Mohamed aptly summarized in his tribute: “I wish them success in their noble educational mission and in continuing their role in building generations that are confident in their abilities, committed to their identity and able to keep pace with the requirements of the future.”
